Reality check

We've been enjoying some beautiful gardens.
This one at Scotney Castle

with its stunning display of acers, azaleas

and rhododendrons

and of course Sissinghurst too with
the white wisteria just opening.

I took note of a pairing of smoke bush

and alliums, underplanted with a pale pink persicaria
and thought I could do something similar at home.

But the fox cubs had other ideas.
These are the ones I salvaged.

I thought of Freda and her deer-munched tulips
and all the other people working against the clock, the climate and the critters
to get their gardens ready for public display this summer.

New Year blues

Our grand daughter was thrilled to be opening presents.
Anyone's presents.
The more the merrier.
The contents? Well they were not really the point of the exercise.
It was the moment of mystery that held her in thrall.

I received many lovely gifts too,
but the sighting of this blue glass gem on a beach that normally
only yields white and green was absurdly thrilling.
I felt as though I had won the lottery.

And yet and yet.
The glass once dry and cached with all the hundreds of other pieces indoors,
has lost some of its lustre.
The magical feeling of acquisition has faded.

Where does this pull towards possession come from?
It seems to start so early.
And the longer it lasts, the older I get, the more complicated it is
to shuck off the weighty legacy.

I had a waking dream nightmare, where I was trying to dispose mentally
of all the items in my house, as if in readiness for an imminent move
to somewhere much smaller than my present abode.
The practical difficulties seemed overwhelming.
And yet so many people have to do just this,
perhaps at a time when they are physically least able to cope.

My parents had a large house which easily swallowed
in its attics and outhouses
the baggage of a long lifetime, raising a family
and running a nursery school from the premises.
My mother was incorrigible.
'You'll have to deal with all this when I'm gone,' she said laughingly.

And when both parents died within five weeks of each other,
that is exactly what we had to do.
It was haphazard and brutal.
A skip was ordered and house clearance people got very lucky.
There simply wasn't time to make considered decisions.

Today I started my Kondo-ing again.

Lamb's (lettuce) to the slaughter?

Two beds of succulent winter salad leaves
in the ground.

Each one surrounded by grit,
with two beer traps filled with Guinness,
strategically placed.
Muddy paths jet washed.
All surrounding weed and plant cover removed.

Let battle commence.

Edited to add:
Two torch patrols tonight
and the enemy's capabilities have not been underestimated.
Both beer traps have been dug up.
One of them moved 30cms and not a drop spilled.
Many, many little black slugs were apprehended while climbing out
from under the boards.
The leopard slugs were patrolling the paths.
But incredibly it turns out they are the gardener's friend.
They eat other slugs! Who knew?

Harvesting lavender

What lovelier job is there in the garden.
It was so hot, I sat in the shade and stripped the stems
in a kind of stupor.

The humming bird moth was the liveliest creature
out there that day - too quick for my camera.
Even the bees were languorous.

These exceptional September days of 30ยบ C plus
are forecast to end tonight with storms.

Meh

Drifting through January in a wispy sort of way.
Somewhat like this cloud.

Waiting for a shaft of light to illuminate
 a big (or even a medium-sized) idea.

Trying not to get too greyed out.
(This picture is in unedited glorious Technicolor.)

Trucking on like these purposeful
shingle shifters.
Their work is never done.
The tides rearrange the banks with untiring dedication.

I'm getting some new glasses.
Maybe that will help to refocus things.

How is January looking from where you are standing?

As quiet as

Looking for a quiet spot,

in a noisy town centre

to wheel grand-daughter

because she needed a nap,

I chanced upon

this place

of peaceful repose.

Snowdrops and hazel

Nothing to say just now.
Too much internal chatter going on.

That voice

or this one

this one,

or this one.

Whichever way - I've been singing it all day.

None of the judges turned round for Bob, but
plenty of other people have jumped into the ring
since his performance on Saturday.

The Play of Light on Domestic Objects

A small part of my portfolio
in support of my application
for a prestigious new position.*
The Professorship of PLDO is my dream job.
It will be a challenging and high risk role
but I think that I am ready to make the leap
back into full time employment.
The five years I have spent
blogging away in the foothills
have not been wasted.
Some turned their hands to
quilting hot water bottle covers,
others to knitting snoods for financial gain,
but I resisted the lure of monetisation.
Now the world of academia, hitherto closed to me,
has come just in the nick of time,
to claim me as one of their own.

Oh dear

she's put up pictures of her washing.
Could do better.

Could be fitter too.
My Pilates teacher expressed surprise to see me
attempting an Intermediate session this morning
after a short break.
I'm thinking of taking up gymnastics.
It can't be too late can it?
