Shining lights

Some bright lights left in the camera since I was last here.

Tall Cat on a rare visit.
We never know when he will appear.
And we never know if it will be for the last time.

An uncle, brother, son and nephew
home from Japan for Christmas.

And the hall decked and ready
for the rest of the family tomorrow.*
Wherever and whoever you are
I hope you have a happy and peaceful day.

*Edited to add that there was an unexpected visit to
A&E for the littlest one tonight
and we are very grateful to have him back home just after midnight
and just before Father Christmas arrived.

New Year blues

Our grand daughter was thrilled to be opening presents.
Anyone's presents.
The more the merrier.
The contents? Well they were not really the point of the exercise.
It was the moment of mystery that held her in thrall.

I received many lovely gifts too,
but the sighting of this blue glass gem on a beach that normally
only yields white and green was absurdly thrilling.
I felt as though I had won the lottery.

And yet and yet.
The glass once dry and cached with all the hundreds of other pieces indoors,
has lost some of its lustre.
The magical feeling of acquisition has faded.

Where does this pull towards possession come from?
It seems to start so early.
And the longer it lasts, the older I get, the more complicated it is
to shuck off the weighty legacy.

I had a waking dream nightmare, where I was trying to dispose mentally
of all the items in my house, as if in readiness for an imminent move
to somewhere much smaller than my present abode.
The practical difficulties seemed overwhelming.
And yet so many people have to do just this,
perhaps at a time when they are physically least able to cope.

My parents had a large house which easily swallowed
in its attics and outhouses
the baggage of a long lifetime, raising a family
and running a nursery school from the premises.
My mother was incorrigible.
'You'll have to deal with all this when I'm gone,' she said laughingly.

And when both parents died within five weeks of each other,
that is exactly what we had to do.
It was haphazard and brutal.
A skip was ordered and house clearance people got very lucky.
There simply wasn't time to make considered decisions.

Today I started my Kondo-ing again.

Spending Christmas

The tree -
pricey Fraser fir but it smells lovely and hasn't dropped any needles.

Advent windows - small charge for a map.

Waldorf stars - this year with the right paper,
waxed translucent coloured squares all the way from San Diego.

Sunrise.

Sunset.

Free gifts.

Tall Cat pays a festive visit

We were worried because Lost Cat notices appeared
on lamp posts in the neighbourhood
with Tall Cat's picture on them.
His name was Busby!
Impossible to think of him as Busby.

He'd been lost for several weeks they said
and we hadn't seen hide nor hair of him.

I rang the number on the posters
and discovered that this was a relatively new boy on the block
and  despite the uncanny resemblance,
could not be Tall Cat.

And then as if to reassure us,
there he was at the window again,
ready to come in and check out the Christmas tree.

In April of next year he will have been visiting for four years.
It's an odd relationship.
We still don't know his real name, but as Tall Cat
he has fans all over the world.
What would his owners think if they knew?

It's beginning to look a bit like

A perfect dawn.
Time to see off this beastly bug for good.
The leaking coolant pipe in the car has been fixed
(yes that was the third thing),
the meat has been collected,
the veg box delivered,

the cake has been iced,

the Advent windows admired,

cards and twinkly lights,

are disposed about the house.
O. has made a huge batch of seething sourdough

and I have cracked open

the Quality Street.

Interesting how much smaller the old tins were.

And finally the orange pastry recipe for mince pies
from my  'well used' Josceline Dimblebey book.
I hope you can read it Frances.

Cooking on gas

It took two hours
and a hefty fee,

to change a 3 amp fuse -
which I provided.
But I am very grateful to the skinny
and much tattooed young man
who wrestled the beast out of its lair,
disemboweled it,
diagnosed the problem
and reassembled it,
without damaging either tiles or floor.

Let the roasting, baking and grilling re-commence.

Exquisite timing

With two loud bangs
our gas stove threw in the towel last night.

At first light the hunt began
for anyone who knew how to fix it.

The usual rigmarole followed with The Four Seasons on hold.
The passing from hand to hand in various organisations.
The out of order number, the wrong number,
the,
'We're very busy, everybody wants their cookers fixed.
I will get someone to call you back between
24 and 48 hours.
Then it will be up to 5 days before anyone can come.'
The lying on the floor with a torch to find
the ten digit model number engraved on its intestines.

The very real possibility that it is beyond repair,
(it is twenty years old),
or the parts are unavailable.
I consider the option of buying a new one,
shudder at the expense
and realise that we will still be sailing very close to the wind
for delivery and installation.
Plus I happen to remember that the floor was laid up to
and not under the stove in a close fitting chimney alcove and
that it was an even tighter fit after the walls were tiled.
Likely the floor and tiles will be damaged
as the old one is extracted and the new one pushed in.

Although the entire electrics have blown
and the gas is therefore cut off to the ovens and grill,
the burners on the top will still work with matches.

Poached goose anyone?

Winging it

What do you do if you decide to make some mince pies
and discover that your mince pie tin is missing?
You get a fancy tin from the back of the cupboard,
thankful that you did not Kondo it

and make mince pie madeleines instead.

The broken one didn't spoil the line up for long.

Have at thee Christmas!

Four jars of mincemeat made
and one Christmas card bought.
A Post-It note saying:

Goose?
Make table bigger?
Get/make curtains.
Put curtains up spare room.

The illusion of being satisfactorily on top of things
in that department
cannot be allowed to persist.

Welcome back old friend

There's no knowing when he will show up,
but he was just what the doctor ordered today.

I think he has some admirers out there too.

I bought Mog's Christmas Calamity today.
Of all the supermarket Christmas ads
this is my favourite.
Freda pointed me towards this behind the scenes clip
with Mog's creator Judith Kerr.

P.S. I have crayons in pots envy.

Gathering in

The food is ready,
the presents wrapped,
the candles lit
the children and
grandchild are here.

Just one very important great-uncle to arrive
and then our Christmas can begin properly.
