One of my favourite childhood books was,
a curiously bi-coloured fairytale
full of foolish greed and redemption
with the moral,
'be careful what you wish for'.
The wooden spoon of the title was carved
from the bowl to the hand hold
from the bowl to the hand hold
with fruit and flowers and sprays of corn, wheat and barley
and it gave two wishes to the holder.
None of our wooden spoons were carved,
and they hadn't been brought to me late at night
by an old woman in a dark-green dress
with a shawl of white and yellow,
but that didn't stop me trying for wishes.
I have them all still.
What would you wish for?
I've missed so much this week even though I have been enjoying the company of an out-of-town friend ... it's good to catch up here.
