August is a bridge: dead-heading, we remember a little sadly
the surging season of growth passed.
We are thinking of the autumn;
soon we'll be preparing for spring.
Doing something now for spring,
just at the point when we may have little patches of dread
about the end of summer,
somehow diminishes winter,
as if it will be simple
to jump over it to the other side.
