Ganbare*

Spring air
Woven moon
And plum scent

Spring too, very soon!

They are setting the scene for it -
plum tree and moon.

Matsuo Basho

I was taught a new word today
by our son's host mother in Japan.
'Ganbare!'
A rallying cry, to encourage one another -
it means,
'Do your best!'

What a brave word - Ganbare - may all of Japan be surrounded by healing thoughts and prayers.

  2. I'm sure that the awful unfolding tragedy in Japan is on all of our minds. Your post alludes to them is such a beautiful, rather hopeful, way.

  4. What a lovely post, and tribute to the Japanese spirit and poetry. I was thinking you may have been glad your son had come home from Japan, but of course you have made connections there now...
