A walk on the beach

A walk on the beach is never dull.

You never know what is going to show up.

 This was a bit different.
A coastguard helicopter
close enough to blow your hat off.

It was the annual training exercise
Even on a calm day
you could see how perilous this was
as they lowered crew members into the tiny lifeboat
and winched them back up again.
And in the bitter cold,
I felt profoundly grateful to the volunteers
who gave up their Sunday
to train to save lives at sea.

  1. I really like the picture of the shed alone, for some reason. I think it must be that it looks so unreal . . . on one level it's a flat featureless, abstract object in an almost lunar landscape. It's so much out of the world that I normally inhabit.

  5. Yes indeed. It makes one feel very feeble. (Me, I mean. I always think of you as being rather resolute.)

  6. I love the hut too and the shingle. They speak coast. Glad to read that you too have been engaged in a variety of non tax return activities. I have done mine now but it took a lot of knitting.

  7. The beach is such a gift because it always gives us something new to love and appreciate, doesn't it?

I felt a similar gratitude for our utility workers who spent hours restoring our power a few weeks ago.
