After the most weakening Winter on record,
are you feeling generally run down?
If only we could all benefit from Soovy Health broth.
We could be fit and ready for Spring
by taking a delicious cup daily.
The impressive list of 15 vegetables has given me an idea.
Carrot, tomato, barley, pimento, spinach
garlic, watercress, orange, chilli, Irish moss,
(may have to ask Mise to send)
onion, parsley, celery leaves, okra.
We can all make our own Savoury Soovy.
Let me know when you've tried it.
From Housewife 1940

I wonder if it is supposed to be Sooving.
ReplyDeleteYes I was surprised at the exotic nature of the ingredients, especially in wartime.
We use Irish Moss to dye our homespun wool and have plenty to spare for the Soovy-craving poorly.
ReplyDeleteI'm ready to go into production if you are.
DeleteSurely oranges were out of the question in 1940?
ReplyDeleteI have plans for 'Red Soup' tomorrow that might go toward my recovery.
The Carrageen Moss is highly nutritious, I shall try to get to a Health Food store to buy some.
We have something similar over here, called V8, due to the 8 veggies, but it is in drink form and when I was a kid a great treat. I'll have to research when it was invented!
ReplyDeleteYes we have that too and these ingredients overlap and may well have been a precursor.
DeleteHow entertaining - especially the name! Sounds very good too. The Gardener swears by a herb and floral concoction called Floradix when he feels under the weather; it seems to work for him, but maybe he needs to justify the cost...
ReplyDeleteYou could possibly add Flatulence to the list of symptoms , if you drank it on a daily basis .
