The playground

Children have been let out to play in the nearby
junior school playground.
The wind carries their shrieks and screams in eddies,
a chaotic descending and ascending chromatic scale
from F sharp to D.

An occasional piercing top note is unidentifiable.

  1. The musical sound of children released from lessons in India is identical to that heard in Europe, despite the immense differences in language. A universal constant...

  2. How fascinating. I'm sure there is a PhD to be had out of this. Does it differ from day to day? Does weather have any effect on the pitch? Do infants sound squeakier than juniors? Do Japanese children sound different? I must try and get a grant.
