Mint tea

This glass of mint tea gives me the excuse to reminisce
about the first time I had it

at this cafe

in Amsterdam,

when we went for a long weekend in 2006.

We called in at the Oudekerk because we could hear someone practising

and my son was lucky enough to be invited
to try out the organ built in 1726.

Leaks

There's a very worrying one in the shower which no amount of sealant has cured,
so the whole thing is going to have to be ripped out,

and another one in the pond liner which seems to have got worse since the thaw

so that will have to be drained and re-lined if it is to have any chance of turning into
the model habitat illustrated in this early Child Education poster.

At present both pond and shower spectacularly fail the U or B test.

Job Title

So next time someone wants to know my occupation,
I think I have the definitive answer.

Joining in, on my own

This is one of those jolly games that people play in their blogs.
Find the picture, 5th frame from the end in March 2008, started here.

I was rather pleased to find this.
Both pieces belonged to my mother,
and by some miracle we have not broken them yet.

The bowl is Maling lustreware, probably Peony Rose,
and the vase is Moorcroft in sunlight yellow lustre glaze.

The bowl has Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy pot pourri in it
(the link is not to the shop in Florence
but to a review in another blog for the London shop),
and the vase is just right for a single Fritillary.

B and U I think.

Funny farm

Chad Valley produced this plywood interlocking jigsaw,
 many many years ago.
And I have just whiled away a happy time putting it together
while ignoring the icy sleet
and pushing a few bothersome thoughts to the back of my mind.

So there I am feeding the hens outside my barn with
Planning Permission for conversion into
a modernist extension to the traditional farmhouse.
Kevin is lurking in the background agonising about my budget
and I've got HFW busy with the hayrick
in exchange for some trout fishing in the river that you can't quite see.
My husband hasn't quite got the hang of horse riding and
I'm a little worried about the cows,
either they are miniatures or I've got some monstrous ducks.
The dung pile by the teeny weeny pond is just plain slovenly.
And where are my pigs?
I promised Jamie I'd give them Sudoku puzzles.

Bleah

The down side of snow is the dirty, slushy, icy, aftermath.
So here are some more pictures from yesterday.

And now for the ironing and a pot of lemon and ginger tea.
I first had this in the cafe at the museum in Brighton.
A beautiful white tea pot filled with little chunks of peeled ginger and lemon slices.

The bird sanctuary...

starlings

and rooks

...in our Sainsbury's car park.

And sparrows fly insouciantly in the aisles and rafters.

Thaw

Footprints were everywhere on the snow,
rabbits and foxes, blackbirds pheasants and partridges,
trails of small paws, the mark of a brush,
and the long feet of the cock pheasant and the tip mark of his tail...

Still winter

At five in the morning I woke to a wonderful silence.
I went to the window and pushed it open carefully.
A little heap of snow fell inwards on to the ledge.
A light wind was taking it now,
and moulding and shaping it against the hedges and fences.
Everything was bone white, under the riding moon.
I wanted to go out and walk in the fields by myself,
to watch for owls and foxes and smell the night smells.
Dull common sense and tiredness prevailed.
I returned to bed and have ever afterwards regretted it,
 for such times come rarely,
and the countryside under the first,
heavy fall of snow at four in the morning
is a changed and enchanted place,
the imagination would feed upon the memory of it for ever after.

(an extract from The Magic Apple Tree by Susan Hill)

Two days ago.

It may not have been five in the morning
but the schools were closed and the trains and buses not running,
so we went to the park and joined people having fun,
in the way that people always have when snow falls.

And it's still snowing.

Will it snow?

The light is very cold and bright.

Labels

My glasses broke today.
Very, very tiresome.

But at least I got my labels done,

caught another stunning sunrise,

and we're going to the last night of Penny's play, Mary Goes First.

A beautiful day

It began with this dawn.

Took me on a walk through my local park on some errands

past the silent bowling green

and into our local bookshop
for a forage through the second hand books
where I turned up this beautiful King Penguin book
of British Butterflies.
