Harvesting lavender

What lovelier job is there in the garden.
It was so hot, I sat in the shade and stripped the stems
in a kind of stupor.

The humming bird moth was the liveliest creature
out there that day - too quick for my camera.
Even the bees were languorous.

These exceptional September days of 30ยบ C plus
are forecast to end tonight with storms.

  1. Oh they've been wonderful warm days haven't they. I can imagine how blissful it was harvesting the lavender. I hope one day to have enough to harvest here too. It's just about my favourite smell. In fact you've reminded me I have a huge bag of it in the cupboard, I must dig it out and make more lavender bags. CJ xx

  2. I had never heard of a hummingbird moth until a couple of years ago when I spotted one among the hosta blossoms and lavender. Too quick for my camera too. Do you confine your lavender to the linen cupboard and knicker drawer, or perhaps use it to discourage scorpions from invading the homestead? We have a surfeit and I don't know what to do with it all.

    1. We don't have any scorpions to discourage, but I am hoping to repel the clothes moths with bags hanging in the wardrobe. Some people bake with lavender. I'm not minded to try that.

  4. I didn't know it repelled clothes moths, but I'm definitely going to try it now - moths are eating all of my socks... Thank you Lucille.

  5. Lucille, as I was reading about your lavender harvesting, I was imagining that delightful scent on your fingers. Bliss.

It's about time for me to purchase some of this year's lavender crop at the market, so that I can freshen up some of the little lavender bags I've made over the years. Thank you for the reminder.

    Happy weekend to you! xo

  7. I love that last photograph. I am getting high on the smell of quince here.

  8. I must trim my lavender too, thank you for the reminder. Last week I was in France and became very excited when I spotted a Hummingbird Hawk Moth, only to glance at the next plant along which had almost a hundred of them! I had never seen one before.

I don't like the flavour of lavender in food.
