The new generation

The sappy snappy tulips are blooming.
The feeble vegetable seedlings have been gently
tucked into their soft beds.

And yes! Here they are! Right on cue.
The latest family of pouncy bouncy fox cubs.
Six of them

eagerly exploring

their exciting new playground.
It is their ancestral home after all.

  1. I know they're vermin, but they're so cute. We had some that came around when we first moved here and then they disappeared.

  6. I sat outside at dusk yesterday and watched the fox Cubs play at the top of the field, and saw the owl swoop too, In our case the vixen appears first and stealthily prowls along the edge of the field and then the Cubs appear in a rumple and tumble of playfulness. Our foxes live in the woods just beyond the field, do your foxes live in your garden all year round or just use under the greenhouse as a maternity ward? Your old apple tree is lovely.

    1. Yes all year round. Although the adolescents disperse, one of them always returns to the greenhouse den. I can't be sure if they are ever a second brood for the same parents or always the next generation.

  7. Cute foxes but I hope they don't dig up those veggie seedlings?

    1. So far so good. We have put up a 'fence' of short bamboo sticks to deter them from hurtling across the beds.

  8. Lucille, your colorful tulips are really dazzling in their sunny spotlight against that dark green leafy backdrop. Very dramatic and beautiful!

The little fox cubs are rather cute. When they come out of shelter to do some exploring do you also see their parents watching nearby? xo

    1. The mother is very vigilant and is often seen with nursing cubs on the deck but I have also seen her running away from them if they get too boisterous!
This year's brood has been especially adventurous and came right down to the main lawn when much smaller than in previous years.

  9. And do they stay around? I have sighted only one fox here in 16 years! They must be fun to watch.

    1. Yes they stay around and of course make quite a mess but there is not much we can do about it so we just try to enjoy our David Attenborough moments.

  10. I've heard (and can easily imagine) that they can be a nuisance, but they're so very cute. We get Mam Raccoon parading her kits up our deck stairs to raid the cat's food dish, and it's undoubtedly a problem, and yet. . . I don't think I ever want to get to the stage where I only see the nuisance and no longer acknowledge the cute.

  11. I finally saw a fox here, but only at the wildlife rehab where I volunteer, and thankfully it was able to be released (though far north of the city). I'd love to see them frolic and play! I am always amazed, though, at the wonderful people who will drive for hours to bring us injured babies of every variety. Last week two young men drove 3 hours with their car heater blasting to being us two baby killdeer.

  12. Love your garden and your foxes. We have some around, too, but I only ever seem to see what I think must be adult males.
